3D Imaging and Ranging Systems

Photon counting sensors, such as SPAD arrays, continue to evolve and improve rapidly. SPADs are taking on larger pieces of the data flow and processing stages through increased on-chip integration of logic and processing algorithms. Turning histogram counts into a complete depth map is quickly becoming an integrated, on-chip function.

This is analogous to the rapid evolution that 2D CMOS color sensors went through as they moved from simple detector arrays into highly-integrated, system-on-chip devices with extensive embedded color processing and pipeline functionality. Now SPAD arrays are moving fast from simple raw data generators to highly-integrated, processing-capable devices.

Applied Pixels is working closely with several 3D imaging system developers to help integrate these sensor devices and their capabilities into powerful new products.
